This is a lovely English chain-drive fusee that is about equivalent to the U.S. 16-size, running sweetly and keeping really good time. Signed D. Hyams (David Hyams) of Manchester although the watches were probably produced in Coventry.
The 9-jewel movement has been freshly serviced in May 2025, runs strong with great amplitude. I carried it for three days, and it ran to about a minute slow over 24 hours. It might manage slightly better than that, if you carefully move the regulator with small adjustments. I think a minute per day error is more than acceptable for a movement of this age, especially a lower jewel count movement.
Dial has an unfortunate small chip at the 9 o'clock of the sub-seconds dial, and it's a pity because otherwise the dial would be magnificent.
Real gold hands look really sharp, and will never corrode. Crystal has a few light scratches but is very clear and fully serviceable.
Movement still has its cover (these often go missing but fortunately this one is still present). Movement cover closes and locks securely in place.
Sterling silver case is the typical English lever configuration with a swing-out movement and lift-spring operated rear cover. Made by J. Harris with his maker's mark, and London hallmarks date it to 1872. The case is in great condition, front bezel snaps very tightly shut as it is supposed to and the rear cover pops open when the pusher button on the crown is pressed. I recommend also pushing the button down when the back cover is closed, and to avoid "snapping" it shut, as this would accelerate the wear.
