This is a very clean and happily running Elgin Model 1, in its basic 7-jewel configuration, and its serial number 1277628 dates its year of production to 1884.
Mechanically it is in pristine running condition, all seven jewels are good, no cracks or chips in them. These 7-jewel movements were inexpensive workhorses in their day, intended to be affordable and extremely reliable and rugged. While they would keep slightly less precise time than movements with higher jewel count, they are built like tanks. This one has an original blue steel mainspring with sufficient power, and it keeps excellent time (about 15 seconds fast over 24 hours, as timed on my timegrapher machine). It was serviced, oiled, and regulated in August 2025.
The open face watch Silveroid (nickel alloy) case is in excellent condition and is still extremely tight, snapping shut with authority. This is how they originally came from the factory when they were new, and while many cases today are worn and loose, this one is tight and you'll probably need a knife or tool to help open it (that's how they did it originally). No significant dents, dings, or scratches. Bow is tight.
The thick crystal is in good shape, with some minor scuffs and light scratches, but in my judgment its still got plenty of life left and did not warrant replacing.
The dial is excellent and I do not see any hairlines or cracks, or chips in the edges. Old pinned dials in this shape are rarely encountered and it complements the nice case very well. Matching blued steel hands.
Overall, a nice and unpretentious watch, and one of the very last "coarse train" or "slow train" Elgin movements ever produced.
