This 18 size Elgin Model 1 seven jewel key wind and key set pocket watch is ideal for reenacting or even for daily carry, since it is a robust movement in great running condition, and housed in a silver case that shows s its 140 years of age. It won't win a beauty contest, and it isn't a pristine watch that collectors will want, but it runs strong and keeps excellent time. Serial number 1847109 dates production to 1885.
All jewels are intact, no cracks or chips. It has a blue steel mainspring, providing sufficient power to give respectable balance amplitude of about 230 degrees. On the timegrapher sitting dial-up, it is running about 1 minute fast over 24 hours, which is really good for these movements.
The case is a 3 ounce Dueber coin silver, and has frankly seen better days, with a soldered repair on the back lid. It is not pretty. However, it is functional and serviceable, snaps closed, and doesn't look too horrible from the outside. Brand new brilliantly clear crystal was just installed.
The early style pinned dial has some unfortunate hairlines but no other significant damage, no major chips or fragments.
Overall, a watch in great mechanical condition, completely serviceable, keeps time, but doesn't look very pretty.
