This is a really nice early Elgin 18 size pocket watch, a Model 1 grade 7 key wind and key set with seven jewels, low six digit serial number 657421 dates its production to 1880.
The movement has just been cleaned and lubricated, it is very clean, runs very strong with fantastic balance amplitude of 240 degrees.
Case is a very well preserved Keystone Silveroid (nickel alloy) with minimal wear, all the snaps are nice and tight, hinges are tight and strong, covers open to 90 degrees as they should. The case is the strong point of this watch. Brand new brilliantly clear crystal has been installed, there is a speck in the crystal that came that way from the factory, it does not detract from the originality of the piece.
Original pinned dial has a couple edge chips including a few significant ones at 8 and 9 o clock right on the rim. Otherwise its a nice dial, with matching hands, which is rare.
Keeps excellent time. On the timegrapher, sitting dial up, the error was six seconds slow over a 24 hour period with high balance amplitude. A new old stock blue steel mainspring provides plenty of power.
Overall, a nice clean watch, in a solid case, and a great example of an early "coarse train" Elgin.
