An early Elgin key-wind 18-size pocket watch, with six-digit serial number 557618 dating production to 1878. This 11-jewel movement is a Model 1 and the "Advance" was a subset of the Grade 13 class of Elgin key-wind's.
It's running strong with good balance amplitude, fully cleaned, serviced, oiled, and regulated in August 2025. On the timegrapher, it settled in at 15 seconds fast over 24 hours in dial-up position, and 4 seconds fast in pendant up. All 11 jewels are intact without cracks or chips.
The Silveroid (nickel alloy) case is in good shape and completely serviceable, even though it does show its age with a few small dings on the case back. The hinges work perfectly. Bow is tight. Matching blued hands. This case has a brand new White's extra thick crystal, that is absolutely and immaculately flawless.
The dial could be original to the movement, and has a few minor edge chips between 10 and 11 o'clock (covered by the bezel when closed) and a chip out of the top of the sub-seconds dial. It's not in pristine shape but it is appropriate to the movement.
Overall, this is a solid and reliable watch, not quite pristine, but fully serviceable with plenty of life remaining. A great example of an early Elgin in one of the less common grade variations.
