A strong running 18-size Waltham Model 1877 “Broadway” grade, 7-jewel movement with serial number 2937244 giving it a manufacture date of 1888. Key wind and key set in a coin silver pair (two-piece) case.
This is a fairly late key wind movement, among the last produced. Professionally restored and serviced in May 2025, and keeping reasonable time within four minutes over 24 hours, in dial-up position.
Dial is correct for the model and date of the movement and may be the original; it has some significant hairline cracks leading to a minor chip at the center hole and is not particularly beautiful even if it is serviceable.
This movement came to me in this same Fahy's Junior coin silver pair case, and I kept it in the same case. It is a worn but completely functional and serviceable (and nice looking). Tasteful engraving on the case back, and moderate wear overall. The case snaps closed securely with a slight amount of play.
Originally this case had a spare key “hidden” in the pendant but these often go missing, as this one has. The hole where the key would have been is now covered by a crown that is purely cosmetic and will probably pop off if you twist or pry at it.
This watch would be excellent for a Civil War or Indian Wars era reenactor. It is appropriately key wind and key set, and functionally identical to 1860’s watches, even though it was produced in the 1880’s. As a late production Waltham key wind, it has further advantages of being more reliable with greater availability of parts in case of repairs.
